Iqaluit, Nunavut (December 20, 2000) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc (NTI) has a new Mission Statement as the first step in creating a new governance model for the organization. The new Mission for NTI is
Inuit Economic, Social and Cultural Well-being Through Implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
The Mission Statement replaces a six paragraph statement adopted in October 1996.
Our new Mission Statement, and the creation of a new governance model for NTI, fits well with the theme of our recent Annual General Meeting: “New Ideas, New Initiatives’, said Paul Quassa, President of NTI.
As well as the Mission Statement, the NTI Board has developed new policies to ensure accountability and define limits, continued Quassa. This will help NTI move into the future with a clear vision for supporting Inuit values and making sure that Inuit rights and benefits are protected.
The NTI Board met through the weekend, working to develop the new governance model, reviewing policies and discussing the future. Elders and Youth contributed to the deliberations with the Board. The Board will meet again in January to develop policies related to results they expect for Beneficiaries, rework the job descriptions of Executive, Board and Chief Administrative Officer and create a monitoring and evaluation policy and schedule.
