NTI: GN Budget runs contrary to Inuktut Education Objectives

(February 23, 2017) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) President Aluki Kotierk today expressed disappointment with the Government of Nunavut’s (GN) proposed budget. Finance Minister Keith Peterson tabled the budget in the Nunavut Legislative Assembly yesterday. Kotierk said she expected reference to the development of sufficiently detailed Inuit Employment Plans (IEP). She noted that IEP’s are outstanding and legally required under Article 23 of the Nunavut Agreement.

Makigiaqta Board of Directors Funds Community Projects

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) President Aluki Kotierk and Government of Nunavut Education Minister Paul Quassa today announced that the Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation’s Board of Directors approved more than $3 million in funding proposals for 12 different training initiatives.

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Aluki Kotierk today congratulated the 2016 Photo of the Year Contest winners.

NTI Encourages Inuit Participation in Aboriginal Peoples Survey

The Aboriginal Peoples Survey is a national survey of Inuit, First Nations and Métis people living in Canada. The survey is repeated every five years and provides valuable information on the social and economic conditions of Indigenous Peoples living in Canada. For 2017, the theme of the survey is participation in the economy. Additional information on health, language, income, housing and mobility will also be collected.

Harvest Plan Approved for Pond Inlet

The Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB) confirmed yesterday that a group of narwhal are trapped in the ice outside the community of Pond Inlet. The whales have no prospect for escape and will not survive. It is not yet known how many whales are trapped in the ice. The entrapment occurred naturally during ice formation.
