NTI Encourages Inuit Participation in Aboriginal Peoples Survey

The Aboriginal Peoples Survey is a national survey of Inuit, First Nations and Métis people living in Canada. The survey is repeated every five years and provides valuable information on the social and economic conditions of Indigenous Peoples living in Canada. For 2017, the theme of the survey is participation in the economy. Additional information on health, language, income, housing and mobility will also be collected.

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) helped develop a Nunavut-specific supplement to the survey to collect information to help improve the economic conditions in Inuit communities. NTI encourages Inuit to respond to the survey. The survey will be conducted in person in Nunavut communities from January to June 2017. Inuit who are 15 years of age or older, enrolled in the Nunavut Agreement and who have responded to the 2016 Census may be selected to participate.

The survey is important because it will help Inuit organizations and governments develop programs and policies to improve Inuit lives. The information will also be used to help find ways to increase Inuit employment in government, as required by Article 23 of the Nunavut Agreement.

The survey will be conducted in Inuktut and English by Statistics Canada employees. Funding for the survey is provided for by the Government of Canada.
