(July 9, 2009 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Paul Kaludjak and Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak today announced the names of the successful recipients of the annual Kakiniit Grants Program. The program awards funds to Beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA) seeking to improve their cultural and academic skills.
This year there were six successful applicants who will receive funds to continue their studies in cultural and academic programs. Their names are Teevi MacKay, Romani Makkik, Crystal Martin, Myra Netser, Patrick Sageatook and Sandi Vincent.
To qualify, applicants were asked to write a short essay about the NLCA.
“Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Kakiniit Grant Program. NTI is proud to provide opportunities for Beneficiaries to engage in cultural traditions and undertake academic studies. I encourage all students to take advantage of this annual grant.”
“It is wonderful that we are able to provide such opportunities for Beneficiaries to continue their academic studies,” said Premier Aariak. “It is also key that our youth are provided with the opportunity to enrich their lives and connect with our cultural traditions. We have been working with NTI for quite some time in order to offer this type of initiative and I am delighted to continue this working relationship.”
Kakiniit grants are co-funded by NTI and the GN. Application forms for next year’s Kakiniit grants will be available April 1, 2010.
