June 16, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut – The Board of Directors of the Nunavut Tunngavik Foundation (NTF) approved amendments to the NTF Scholarship Program Policy at its meeting in Kinngait, Nunavut, on September 24, 2025. As part of these changes the Foundation has discontinued its Post-Secondary Scholarship program, due to overlap with similar funding currently provided through Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation.
In 2016 NTF received $8,559,561 from the Designated Amount Fund established under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. These funds were intended to support educational, language, cultural and history-based programs in accordance with an Administration Plan agreed upon between Canada and the Inuvialuit Education Foundation.
Over the past decade, the Foundation has used these funds to provide scholarships and programming that have benefited Inuit across Nunavut. However, the remaining funds are projected to be exhausted by mid-2026. To ensure responsible stewardship of the Foundation’s resources and continued support for priority programs, the Board made the decision to discontinue the Post-Secondary Scholarship Program.
Although the Post Secondary scholarship is no longer available, the Foundation will continue to offer its Skills and Employment Advancement Scholarships along with the Culture and Healing Programs.
