NTI Responds to One Canada Economy Act; Establishes List of Inuit Projects of National Interest for Nunavut

For Immediate Release

(August 27, 2025 – Kinngait, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) welcomes the passage of Bill C-5, the One Canadian Economy Act, and is setting clear conditions to ensure the act delivers concrete results in Nunavut while fully respecting Inuit rights and modern treaties. Bill C-5 received Royal Assent on June 26, 2025, enacting both the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act and the Building Canada Act.

Under the new framework, the federal government is compiling a list of nation building projects and has committed to a streamlined review process supported by a Major Projects Office and an Indigenous Advisory Council. NTI will work to ensure that each step of implementation in Nunavut is designed and carried out in partnership with Inuit and consistent with the Nunavut Agreement.

NTI and the Government of Nunavut, in March 2025, agreed to a list of priority projects and jointly held the Arctic Sovereignty and Security Summit to bring together partners. NTI is advancing this work through the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee (ICPC), which met with the Prime Minister in Inuvik on July 24, 2025, to discuss the implementation of the Building Canada Act across Inuit Nunangat.

“Inuit have been calling for these major projects for decades. The Board is excited to accelerate infrastructure in Nunavut to create jobs and businesses, and lower the cost of living for Inuit,” said NTI President Jeremey Tunraluk. “With clear conditions, meaningful investments, and in true partnership we can accelerate nation-building projects in Nunavut that strengthen Inuit sovereignty by strengthening Inuit communities.”

NTI’s immediate objectives are to co-develop early Projects of National Interest from Nunavut, including the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link, Iqaluit Hydro Project, Qikiqtarjuaq Deep-Sea Port and the Grays Bay Road & Port; and to secure Inuit ownership pathways and financing so that the benefits remain in Nunavut.
