NTI Launches Survey for Inuit Educators in Nunavut

(September 28, 2022, Iqaluit, Nunavut) Today, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) introduces a survey to learn about the experiences and perspectives of Inuit educators in Nunavut.

NTI would like to understand the challenges facing Inuit educators in Nunavut. We would like to hear from Inuit who are currently, have previously been, or are training to be an educator in Nunavut’s K-12 system. This includes people who are or who have worked as principals, vice-principals, teachers, student support teachers/assistants, learning coaches, language specialists, Ilinniarvimmi Inuusilirijiit, Inuksiutiliriji, teacher trainees, casual relief and substitute teachers.

The survey is anonymous, and the results will be summarized and used to improve support for and representation of Inuit educators in Nunavut with the goal of supporting the use of Inuktut in schools.

“Nunavut was created because Inuit wanted to protect our language and culture, our whole way of life. Inuktut continues to be the majority language in Nunavut, however it is quickly declining. Schools must support Inuit children and youth to thrive in their mother tongue.  Inuit educators must feel supported to teach in Inuktut, in order to achieve the Inuit vision for bilingual education and self-determination. I encourage Inuit educators to complete this survey and participate in the process,” said NTI President Aluki Kotierk.

The survey can be accessed through https://springboardpolicy.limesurvey.net/314322?lang=en

If you would like assistance with completing the survey, you may contact NTI’s Inuktut Education Support Manager, Peter Ottokie at 867-975-7582 or toll-free at 888-646-0006.

NTI is committed to  an education system that is grounded in Inuit language and culture, where Inuit children can learn without discrimination in their first, only, or preferred language and for education in Nunavut to uphold the inherent dignity of Inuit.
