For Immediate Release
(January 23, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) Igluvut Corporation held its inaugural Board of Directors meeting in Iqaluit yesterday, marking a major milestone in the development of an Inuit-led housing system for Nunavut. Earlier in the day, a Special Members Meeting approved Igluvut’s by-laws, core founding policies, and the appointment of a public accountant, formally establishing the Corporation’s governance and legal foundation.
“This is an important and historical step toward creating safe and affordable housing that reflects Inuit needs and priorities,” said Interim Chair Paul Irngaut. “Igluvut is about building lasting Inuit capacity to plan, build, and manage housing, for Inuit, by Inuit.”
The Board is composed of two representatives from Nunavut Tunngavik (NTI) and one from each Regional Inuit Association. It will now focus on recruiting a Chief Executive Officer and moving toward a permanent Board.
Igluvut is supported by the $135 million Inuit Housing Fund, designed to sustain long-term affordability and ensure the sustainability of Inuit housing over time. The Corporation fills a long-standing gap in Nunavut’s housing continuum by focusing on affordable rental and homeownership options for Nunavut Inuit, outside of government subsidized social housing and employer-based systems.
Throughout 2025, the NTI Board, through its Infrastructure and Housing Advisory Committee (IHAC), supported the development of Igluvut and the Inuit Housing Fund. Yesterday’s meetings advance Angirratsaliulauqta, Nunavut’s first Inuit Housing Action Plan, and NTI’s vision for thriving Inuit communities under Inungnik Makipalliatittiniq 2025–2029.
