NTI Board Approves Youth Mental Health Plan and Major Housing Investments

For Immediate Release

Iqaluit, Nunavut (June 10, 2026) — Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) has approved several major initiatives to strengthen youth wellness, housing, and community development across Nunavut.

“These decisions reflect our commitment to supporting Inuit youth, strengthening housing in our communities, and ensuring Inuit organizations have the resources they need to serve Nunavut Inuit,” said NTI President Gloria Uluqsi.

The Board has approved a three-year $6.8 million spending plan to strengthen wellness programs and services for Nunavut Inuit youth and to establish a Nunavut Youth Council. This funding is provided through the Government of Canada’s Youth Mental Health Fund and will support Inuit-led approaches to youth wellness between 2025-26 and 2028-29.

The approved plan reflects NTI’s strategic direction and long-standing commitments to Inuit youth. It advances commitments in Inungnik Makipalliatittiniq to establish a Nunavut Youth Council in partnership with the Regional Inuit Associations, supports the Resource Revenue Trust Policy’s focus on investing in the current generation and contributes to the goals of Inuusivut Annirnaqtut by strengthening youth leadership and representation.

“Our young people have told us they want to be heard, involved, and supported,” said NTI President Gloria Uluqsi. “This Investment will help more opportunities for youth leadership, strengthen mental wellness supports in our communities, and ensure Inuit youth have a stronger voice in decisions that affect their future.”

The approved plan will support expanded youth-focused wellness programming, community-based mental health initiatives, leadership development opportunities, and the creation of structures that enable Inuit youth to participate meaningfully in shaping the future of Nunavut.

The Board has approved the distribution of $18.7 million in interest income generated from the Budget 2022 Housing Funds investment.

The funding will be distributed as follows:

· Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.: $5.7 million

· Qikiqtani Inuit Association: $6.6 million

· Kivalliq Inuit Association: $3.6 million

· Kitikmeot Inuit Association: $2.8 million

This ensures all interest earned from the investment is directed toward Inuit housing priorities across Nunavut.

“Affordable housing is a critical need in our communities, and we are focused on increasing Inuit participation in building it,” said President Uluqsi.

To advance supportive housing in Nunavut, the Board approved the use of Budget 2022 Inuit Supportive Housing Funding to move forward transitional housing projects in Baker Lake, Gjoa Haven, Pangnirtung, and Sanikiluaq.

“Supportive housing helps people access stable housing while receiving the services they need. These projects represent an important investment in community well-being,” said President Uluqsi.

Nunavut received $422.6 million of the federal Inuit Housing allocation, distributed using the Board-approved formula for NTI (30%), QIA (32%), KivIA (21%), and KitIA (17%). Following a competitive process, Arctic Fresh Ltd. was selected to develop and deliver the approved transitional housing projects.

“Our Board is focused on practical actions that improve the lives of Nunavut Inuit. These decisions support youth wellness, housing, and stronger communities across Nunavut,” said President Uluqsi.

The next Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Board of Directors meeting will take place on Aug 25-27, 2026 in Baker Lake, NU.
