For Immediate Release
(February 27, 2025) Today, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) celebrates the signing of the Sinaa Agreement, an agreement between the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) and the Government of Canada. Under the Agreement, Canada is providing a $200 million investment to QIA alongside $70 million from donors, to create meaningful jobs and support a conservation economy with Inuit values, knowledge and leadership at the forefront.
Highlights of the Agreement include:
• The creation of four Nauttiqsuqtiit Conservation Centres
• New Inuit-led governance bodies for conservation decisions
• Increased access to country food through the expansion of the Nauttiqsuqtiit Program
The Sinaa Agreement also respects and upholds Article 15 of the Nunavut Agreement, which recognizes that the legal rights of Inuit in marine areas are based on traditional and current use. Article 15 further recognizes that an Inuit economy based in part on marine resources is both viable and desirable.
Through the signing of the Sinaa Agreement, QIA is advancing Inuit rights in conservation, fisheries and governance in marine areas, while supporting Inuit culture, language and livelihoods for current and future generations.
