(March 26, 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) and Inhabit Media is committed to ensuring that Inuit families have access to Inuktut books and educational resources to support Inuktut language learning at home. With support from the Indigenous Communities Support Fund from the Government of Canada, NTI, in partnership with Inhabit Media, are pleased to distribute home-based Inuktut Literacy Kits to Inuit children in Nunavut.
The Inuktut Literacy Kits will include storybooks, magazines, novels, traditional stories, DVDs, CDs, and literacy activities. Nunavut teachers of students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 will receive and distribute the kits to students in their classes.
“NTI is a proud supporter of Inuktut language revitalization, education and promotion. By giving young school children the resources to learn our language, we are giving them the opportunity to thrive in the Inuktut language”, said Aluki Kotierk, President of NTI
“There were policies that tried to diminish the Inuktitut language. Let’s keep our language alive by, speaking, reading and writing it. Let’s do our part.”—Louise Flaherty, Inhabit Media
We encourage parents and caregivers to explore additional home-learning support, books, and films which can be found online at Inuktut Language Support (https://nti-inhabit.com). Resources to continue fostering the ability to communicate and thrive in Inuktut in home as well as at school are critically important to the overall well-being of Inuit children.
