Jose Amaujaq Kusugak Memorial Scholarship Recipients Announced

(October 19, 2022, Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) President Aluki Kotierk congratulates Anita Ulimaumi of Arviat and Selma Ell of Coral Harbour as the recipients of the Jose Amaujaq Kusugak (JAK) Memorial Scholarship for 2022.

The JAK Scholarship awards $5,000.00 annually to two (2) current students who embody Jose Kusugak’s passion and dedication to education, language, and advancement of Inuit rights.

Anita and Selma are both attending the Nunavut Teacher Education Program in their respective communities delivered through the Nunavut Arctic College in partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland.

“It gives me great hope knowing that young Inuit like Anita and Selma are making personal decisions to help advance our Inuit culture and language.” said President Kotierk. “They both submitted their essays in Inuktitut and spoke about their inspiration behind their desire to become teachers in Nunavut. They are aware of the challenges we are facing to pass on our beautiful language to our children, and Anita and Selma want to do their part in reversing the decline of Inuktut when they become teachers in our schools.”

NTI would like to thank all students who took the time and effort to apply for the JAK Memorial Scholarship. The next deadline for applications to the scholarship is July 9, 2023.
