(June 30, 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) This Canada Day, July 1st, Canadians in the three territories will have the unique opportunity to watch the ‘must-see’ documentary film, “Kappiataittut/Fearless,” which examines the formation of Nunavut through the voices of the Inuit negotiators, who over thirty years, made history and changed the map of Canada.
‘Kappiataittut /Fearless’ was produced in 2018 by Inuit Communications Systems Limited (ICSL), a subsidiary of the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) and was commissioned by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Nunavut Agreement.
In the 1960’s, a new generation of Inuit foresaw the extinction of their culture and witnessed their parents and grandparents living in fear. A small group of rebellious young Inuit set out to fight back against the destructive forces of cultural domination and colonialism. Their vision – a land claim agreement with the Canadian government that would result in a new territory called Nunavut. “Kappiataittut” reveals a twisting, dramatic, thirty-year long fight for Indigenous rights that reshaped Canadian Confederation. Told by the voices of people who made Canadian history.
“If we don’t make a movement, we’re going to be walked all over. We’re going to lose our culture. When we realized what was at stake, we no longer felt powerless.” In the film, David Aglukark, Negotiator, describes the pressing need for Inuit to become organized in the early 1970’s.
“I am glad that this information has been recorded as it is an important part of our history and this collaboration will enable more Canadians to learn about the history of Nunavut and use this film as resource material.”, said Manitok Thompson, CEO of IBC.
“Watch Kappiataittut – a true story about how Inuit, all peacefully, successfully changed the map of Canada to create a jurisdiction with a majority Indigenous population who speaks, homogeneously, Inuktut!”, said NTI President, Aluki Kotierk
“Kappiataittut / Fearless” will air in Inuktitut at 6 pm (EST) and 8 pm (EST) on July 1st on CBC Northern Service.
The full length version of Kappiataittut/Fearless will be available to view on the IsumaTV website on July 2nd, 2021.
