Nunavut Tunngavik President Cathy Towtongie today congratulated Natan Obed on winning the election for president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. Natan was elected president yesterday during the ITK annual general meeting in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.
“I have worked with Natan for the last several years in his role as director of NTI’s Department of Social and Cultural Development. He cares deeply about Inuit and will use his compassion and strong leadership abilities to guide Canada’s national Inuit organization. I look forward to continuing a positive working relationship with Natan,” said Towtongie.
Obed held previous positions at ITK and with the Labrador Inuit Association, the predecessor to the Nunatsiavut government. He resigned his position at NTI, effective immediately.
Towtongie thanked outgoing president Terry Audla for his years of service to ITK.
