Repulse-Bay, Nunavut (October 19, 2000) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc (NTI) will continue its legal battle over the Federal Turbot allocation.
On Tuesday October 17, the Federal Court of Appeal dismissed the Turbot Quota appeal brought by NTI. The case challenges the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans’ Turbot Allocations for 1998 to 2002 for the waters surrounding Baffin Island.
NTI will seek leave to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Canada.
This is a very important issue for Inuit fishers. said James Eetoolook, First Vice President of NTI. These are our lands and our seas. Yet we have been allocated significantly less than 30% of the Canadian Turbot quota. The Turbot fishery can have great economic benefit for Nunavut and to see nearly three quarters of the quota go to southern fishers makes no sense to us.
