NR 02-06 DIS ENG Board Dismissed.doc
(March 22, 2002 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) The Nunavut Tunngavik Inc (NTI) Board decided at a special meeting today to revoke the appointments of the Nunavut Social Development Council (NSDC) Members. NTI has appointed new Members to serve as caretaker and oversee the wind-up of the Council.
The directive in our Coral Harbour Resolution is clear, said Cathy Towtongie, President of NTI. The Board of NTI intends to achieve a smooth and timely restructuring.
The members appointed today to the NSDC Board are mainly members of NTI’s Board. They will oversee the efficient and timely windup of the corporation and the smooth transfer of assets and liabilities. While there are still a number of legal steps that must be taken, NTI has assumed responsibility for Article 32 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
NTI’s Board passed a resolution at its recent meeting in Coral Harbour revoking NSDC’s designation as a Designated Inuit Organization. A transition plan is in place and all NSDC staff have received letters of offer to become employees of NTI.
Strong and decisive action has to be taken to address the grave social issues facing Nunavut today, noted Towtongie. The Board of NTI will continue to move quickly and with certainty to achieve that goal.
