Iqaluit, Nunavut (October 24, 2000) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) held its Board Meeting from October 17 through October 19, 2000 at Repulse Bay. Over the course of three days of deliberation, the Board considered a wide range of issues important to the Beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Some key resolutions included:
Turbot Allocation
The resolution directs Legal counsel to apply to the Supreme Court for leave to appeal the Federal Court’s dismissal of NTI’s challenge of the Turbot Allocation to Nunavut Fishers;
Nunavut Elections Office
The resolution directs cooperation with Government of Nunavut in the development of a central Elections Office in Nunavut;
Cambridge Bay School and Community Library Project
The resolution calls for a contribution to the rebuilding of the school, library and cultural centre in Cambridge Bay, which was destroyed by fire
Global Warming
The resolution calls for support to addressing the world-wide issue of Global Warming using the traditional knowledge of Inuit, by supporting an Elders Conference on the matter;
Homelessness in Nunavut
The resolution supports a project proposal for the development of a strategic work plan to reduce homelessness in Nunavut;
The next meeting of the Board will take place in Arctic Bay in February 2001. Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.’s Annual General Meeting, will be held mid November in Arviat.
