Iqaluit, Nunavut (October 25, 2000) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) today announced the theme for its Annual General Meeting, to be held mid November in Arviat. The theme is “New Ideas, New Initiatives’.

In December 1999, an independent review of the first five years of implementing the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement concluded that while many important steps had been taken, there was much more to be done. NTI has taken a variety of actions to consolidate the important work done to date and move on to address areas that need more attention. The New Ideas, New Initiatives theme was adopted to reflect this.

Planning new programs and reviewing results of current ones has led NTI to strengthen its organization and structure, establishing key positions and reassigning resources to ensure that priority areas are well covered. With a total current staff complement of 72, 12 of which are new or substantially revised, NTI is well placed to effectively meet its Claim responsibilities in such areas as Wildlife, Mineral Exploration, Beneficiary Enrollment, Inuit employment in government and other Implementation obligations.

Decentralization is a cornerstone of NTI’s operation. Departments are based in Iqaluit (President’s Office, Administration, Implementation and Communication); Rankin Inlet (2nd Vice President’s and Vice President of Finance’s offices, Finance, Human Resources, Business Development, Wildlife); Cambridge Bay (1st Vice President’s Office, Lands, Legal Services); and Ottawa (government liaison). Twenty-five staff work out of the Iqaluit office, 31 out of Rankin Inlet, 14 out of Cambridge Bay and 2 out of Ottawa.

Over the next eighteen months, new programs and enhancements to current programs will be announced. NTI is excited by the possibilities for the future and looks forward to sharing new directions with its Beneficiaries.
