Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. to hire new Chief Executive Officer

NR 05-01 CEO ENG NTI to Hire New CEO.doc

(January 24, 2005 — Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Paul Kaludjak announced today that NTI is beginning the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive Officer. John Lamb has filled the position for the last three years, but his contract is set to expire July 31, 2005. President Kaludjak said NTI plans to fill the position with an Inuktitut-speaking Beneficiary. NTI will also be recruiting a new Chief Operating Officer to replace Richard Paton, who will be leaving NTI in mid-February.

NTI is deeply committed to hiring Inuit to work within our organization, and now is the appropriate time to bring in a Beneficiary to take over as CEO. NTI is a stronger organization than ever before. We have solid governance and policies, effective and accountable financial management, an energetic and ambitious political agenda, and strong partnerships with Inuit organizations and the Government of Nunavut, said Kaludjak.

NTI currently leads the way in terms of Inuit employment, with approximately 75 per cent Inuit staff, compared with the Government of Nunavut’s 45 per cent and the federal government’s 33 per cent Inuit employment levels.

This decision also reflects our commitment to increasing the use of Inuktitut in the workplace, added Kaludjak. Having Inuktitut-speakers in the CEO and COO positions is going to help us expand the use of Inuktitut among staff, and between staff and the Board.

NTI expects to hire the new CEO over the next few months. Mr. Lamb will play a key role in the transition process by taking on the role of Senior Advisor to the CEO for the remainder of his contract. A new COO will be hired once the new CEO comes on board.

Mr. Lamb has worked at NTI since 1999. He was originally hired as the organization’s Director of Implementation, but moved over to take on the role of CEO two years later. Under his direction, NTI has grown considerably, and has become more successful in meeting the needs of Inuit and in tackling the failure of the federal government to meet its Land Claims obligations. Mr. Lamb intends to remain in Iqaluit with his family upon completion of his contract.
