(April 26, 2006 – Iqaluit, NU; Kuujjuaq, QC; Inuvik, NT) Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI), Makivik Corporation, and Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) approved on Monday the final Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. The agreement addresses the legacy of Canada’s residential school policies and marks a collaborative effort between Aboriginal groups, government, churches, and lawyers to provide justice, reconciliation, commemoration, healing, and funding for education to former residential school students and their families.

The Inuit organizations worked intensively to ensure that the voices of Inuit former residential school students were heard and taken into account throughout this process, said Makivik President Pita Aatami.

We made sure that every Inuit student who resided at a hostel or school is eligible for compensation and will benefit from the overall settlement. We hope that at the end of this process, Inuit families can reconcile, find closure and move on to new beginnings, said NTI President Paul Kaludjak.
