NTI Supports Nunatsiavut Government and
Welcomes Canada’s Decision to End NCC RIRSD Table
(Iqaluit, Nunavut) September 8, 2026 – Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) supports the Nunatsiavut Government and welcomes the Government of Canada’s decision to terminate the NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC)’s Recognition of Indigenous Rights and Self-Determination (RIRSD) table.
NTI has long shared the concerns raised by the Nunatsiavut Government and other Inuit rights holders regarding Canada’s engagement with the NCC. This decision provides important clarity and reaffirms that discussions regarding Inuit rights, self-determination, and governance must be grounded in the voices and authority of recognized Inuit rights holders.
“NTI joins the Nunatsiavut Government in welcoming this decision,” said NTI President Gloria Uluqsi. “Inuit identity is rooted in our shared history, culture, communities, and lived experience. The recognition and protection of Inuit rights must be guided by Inuit and by organizations that are mandated to represent Inuit rights holders.”
NTI recognizes the leadership shown by the Nunatsiavut Government in consistently advocating for the protection of Inuit rights and in raising concerns about processes that could create confusion regarding Inuit identity and representation.
The decision to end the NCC RIRSD table is an important step toward strengthening Inuit self-determination and ensuring that federal recognition processes respect the distinct rights of Inuit. It also reinforces the principle that programs, funding, and opportunities intended for Inuit should directly benefit Inuit communities and organizations.
“We appreciate the work of President Johannes Lampe and the Nunatsiavut Government in bringing attention to this important issue,” added Uluqsi. “We look forward to continuing to work alongside Nunatsiavut and Inuit partners across Inuit Nunangat to advance our shared priorities and ensure that Inuit rights, and governance structures are respected and upheld.”
NTI remains committed to working with Inuit regional organizations and governments across Inuit Nunangat to protect Inuit rights, strengthen Inuit self-determination, and support a future where Inuit voices continue to guide decisions that affect Inuit communities.
