NTI Board Approves Nunavut Inuit Climate Action Plan

For Immediate Release

Iqaluit, Nunavut (June 8, 2026) — Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) is pleased to announce that the Nunavut Inuit Climate Action Plan (NICAP) has been formally approved by the NTI Board of Directors. The approval of the NICAP establishes the first Inuit-led climate action framework for Nunavut and provides a roadmap for responding to the growing impacts of climate change on Inuit communities.

Based on the realities of Inuit living across Nunavut, the NICAP brings together shared priorities, goals, and expectations for climate action. It sets the overall direction for NTI’s leadership, partnerships, advocacy, and policy development related to climate change, ensuring that Inuit perspectives remain at the centre of decision-making.

The NICAP was developed with Nunavut Inuit through community engagement across the territory and in partnership with the Regional Inuit Associations. It provides a comprehensive, Inuit-driven framework to guide responses to the accelerating impacts of climate change across the territory.

The Plan focuses on four priority areas identified by Inuit:
· Culture and Language Communities and Homes
· Health and Well-being
· Environmental Stewardship

“Climate change is affecting communities today. This plan reflects what Inuit have told us about their priorities, concerns, and hopes for the future. It is grounded in Inuit knowledge and values, and it gives us a clear direction for the work ahead.” Gloria Uluqsi, President, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.

The Plan also includes a high-level implementation framework to support coordination and prioritization of Inuit-led climate initiatives. This framework will continue to be refined in collaboration with NTI departments and participating RIAs as implementation progresses.

Over the coming months, NTI will work with the Regional Inuit Associations, Inuit organizations, governments, and partners to advance implementation priorities identified in the Plan and support Inuit-led climate initiatives across Nunavut.
