Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) President Aluki Kotierk today congratulated three Nunavut Inuit for receiving Governor General’s citations. Filmmaker and activist Alethea Arnaquq-Baril was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross; traditional Inuit tattoo artist Hovak Johnston was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal; and NHL hockey player Jordin Tootoo received the Meritorious Service Medal. All three Inuit were recognized because of their significant contributions to Indigenous leadership.
“The recognition bestowed on Alethea, Hovak and Jordin are a testament to the skill, talent and accomplishment among Inuit. May this celebration be a reminder of our collective abilities and serve as an inspiration so that Inuit continue to become our best. Regardless of which dream we pursue, may we move forward toward a healthier future. Congratulations to the recipients!” said Kotierk.
Kotierk commended and thanked all of today’s recipients for the leading role they play in Canada. They received their citations at an Indigenous Recognition Honours Presentation ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa today.
