(May 12, 2010 — Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Paul Kaludjak said he was pleased to see Bill C-25, the Nunavut Planning and Project Assessment Act, introduced and given first reading in the House of Commons today.
This legislation is required by Article 10 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Bill C-25 sets forth the powers, duties and functions of the Nunavut Planning Commission and the Nunavut Impact Review Board as contained in NLCA Articles 11 and 12.
“This is an important piece of legislation because it brings NTI and the Inuit we represent one step closer to full implementation of the NLCA. The tabling of the bill today is the result of several years of hard work by NTI, NIRB, NPC, the Government of Nunavut and the Government of Canada,” said Kaludjak.
Kaludjak said NTI was optimistic that Parliament will adopt a law consistent with the NLCA, and said NTI and the Regional Inuit Associations will examine the Bill in detail in coming weeks.
