NR 04-22 GRA ENG Government Relations Advisor.doc

(May 26, 2004 Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Paul Kaludjak today announced that Joanasie Akumalik will become NTI’s first Government Relations Advisor, operating out of the organization’s Ottawa office. Akumalik will report to NTI’s Chief Executive Officer.

This position was created as a result of a Board of Directors 2003 resolution that called for the development of a comprehensive political strategy in support of NTI’s efforts to accelerate implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA).

In his new role, Akumalik will support NTI’s land claims implementation work by establishing and maintaining relations with Government of Canada officials. Akumalik will keep NTI informed of upcoming issues on the federal political scene that affect Inuit, while identifying links between Inuit priorities and potential federal government programs.

Mr. Akumalik will provide a much needed link to Ottawa for our land claims organization. He will develop and maintain an extensive network of contacts with the federal government, non-government organizations and the Ottawa media to help increase awareness of Nunavut in Southern Canada, as well as keeping NTI abreast of upcoming issues that affect Inuit in our territory, said Kaludjak. By acting as our Government Relations Advisor, Mr. Akumalik will help NTI advance more quickly on full implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, said Kaludjak.

Akumalik’s mandate will include co-ordination with other Inuit organizations located in Ottawa, as well as with the Government of Nunavut’s Ottawa office, on issues of mutual interest.

Akumalik has a proven leadership record, with time spent as the Mayor of Arctic Bay, the Executive Director of the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board, and most recently as NTI’s Director of Implementation.

I look forward to the challenge of this new position, and I am excited about actively promoting the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement with the federal government and other organizations in Ottawa, said Akumalik.

Akumalik will join NTI’s existing staff of four people in Ottawa.
