(March 9, 2005 – Rankin Inlet, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. 2nd Vice-President Raymond Ningeocheak today announced changes made to the Programs for Beneficiaries offered by NTI. The changes, passed in a resolution during the recent NTI Board of Directors meeting in Kugluktuk, were needed in order to stretch funds to continue the popular programs.

We want to help as many Inuit as possible with NTI’s different programs, but year after year we experience a shortfall between the money we have available and the need for programs for Inuit Beneficiaries, said Ningeocheak. The Nunavut Trust has strongly advised us to limit the financial commitments NTI makes, so we are in a position now where we have to review these programs and the way we fund them, he said.

Ningeocheak said NTI’s Board of Directors asked the organization’s Chief Executive Officer to review the programs and to provide recommendations during the September board meeting. Recommendations will include possible changes to ensure the programs are responsive to Beneficiary needs, that they are financially sustainable, that they not duplicate responsibilities belonging to government, and that they take into account the roles and funding of NTI and the Regional Inuit Associations.

Though the funds for Programs for Beneficiaries are exhausted for the current fiscal year, Ningeocheak said the programs will resume on April 1, at the start of the 2005-2006 fiscal year. Further, to ensure NTI continues to provide assistance to as many Beneficiaries as possible in the coming year, Ningeocheak said the number of individuals eligible for the Bereavement Program was reduced from three to two Beneficiary family members per Beneficiary funeral. He also said the current Beneficiary Insurance Program now excluded alcohol and drug related accidental death and dismemberment coverage.

These changes should help extend our programs in the coming year. This is important as we strive as an organization to improve the lives of Inuit, said Ningeocheak.
