NTI Releases Plain Language Guide to the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement

NR 04-24 NLC ENG NLCA Plain Language.doc

(May 25, 2004 — Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. today released a Plain Language Guide to the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA). Entitled Tukisittiarniqsaujumaviit, or, Would you like to have better understanding, the Guide was published to help Inuit better understand their benefits and rights under the NLCA.

The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement is the foundation of Nunavut and it is important that people know what it says. NTI recognizes that the language in the NLCA is very difficult to understand so we decided some time ago to provide people with a version of the Agreement that is less complex. The document we are releasing today fulfills an important commitment to Inuit, said NTI President Paul Kaludjak.

The Guide includes a section on each of the 42 Articles contained in the NLCA. The language in the Guide is more basic than the language found in the NLCA, but it is true to the ideas contained in each of the Articles.

NTI is dedicated to achieving Inuit social, cultural and economic well-being through implementation of the NLCA. President Kaludjak said he hopes the Guide will increase public understanding of the Land Claims. NTI also hopes the Guide will help move implementation of the NLCA forward.

The people responsible for land claims implementation, whether government officials or employees of Inuit organizations, would definitely benefit from a better understanding of the Agreement, said Kaludjak. This Guide will help them understand it, and that should help the entire Land Claims implementation process.

The Plain Language Guide will be widely distributed to Inuit organizations, schools, wildlife organizations and hamlets across Nunavut, as well as to the federal and territorial governments.

Copies of the document can be obtained from all NTI offices.
