NTI Issues Second Call for Proposals for Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Oral History Project

NR 04-32 TWO ENG Oral History Second Call.doc

(October 29, 2004 — Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) today issued a Second Call for Proposals for the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA) Oral History Project. The Second Call is designed to give Inuit Beneficiaries and Nunavut residents another opportunity to secure funding for NLCA oral history work they wish to pursue.

Though NTI received several worthwhile and interesting submissions during the first call for proposals, the organization identified the need to issue a Second Call after receiving additional requests from Nunavummiut seeking funding for this critical initiative.

The NLCA Oral History Project was developed as a result of a 2003 NTI Board of Directors resolution that called for immediate steps to be taken to capture the oral history surrounding the negotiations of the NLCA.

The NTI Board committed $50,000 in funding for the project. NTI then approached the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth (CLEY) for additional funds. The department responded extremely positively and contributed another $50,000 toward the initiative.

Under the scope of the project, Beneficiaries of the NLCA, residents of Nunavut and non-profit community-based organizations in Nunavut can apply for funds to record and transcribe the oral history of the development, formation and negotiations of the NLCA. Funds are also available for individuals who wish to pursue projects devoted to the photographic history of the NLCA.

NLCA Oral History Project information kits, including application forms and eligibility details, are now available in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and English from NTI’s Director of Communications. The entire package is also available on NTI’s Web site at
