NTI Congratulates Arviat on Selection as Home of Inuit Nunangat University Main Campus

For Immediate Release

(February 11, 2026 – Ottawa, Ontario) Nunavut Tunngavik congratulates the community of Arviat on being selected as the main campus location of the Inuit Nunangat University, marking a major milestone for Inuit-led education.

“This is a proud and meaningful day for Inuit, for Inuit Nunangat, for Nunavut and indeed for Canada,” said NTI President Paul Irngaut. “The decision to locate the main campus of Inuit Nunangat University in Arviat reflects the strength of the community, where Inuktitut and Inuit culture are deeply rooted, and where Inuit knowledge and leadership have long guided education.”

Arviat has a strong history of Inuit-led curriculum development grounded in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuit values and principles. The decision of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Board of Directors to host the main campus in Arviat recognizes these strengths and affirms that Inuit education belongs in Inuit communities.

NTI announced a $50 million dollar investment towards the construction of the Inuit Nunangat University main campus. This is an addition to last year’s pledge of $2 million. The university will also be one of the institutions benefiting from a base figure of $50 million for student housing and $35 million for programming.

This investment is made through NTI’s Pre-Employment Training funds, enabled by the signing of Nunavut’s Implementation Contract, and reflects NTI’s responsibility under the Nunavut Agreement to advance the social, cultural, and economic well-being of Inuit.

“Post-secondary education is one of the strongest pathways to Inuit self-determination, strong governance, and thriving communities,” said Irngaut. “Inuit Nunangat University will create opportunities for Inuit learners close to home, support Inuit educators and knowledge holders, create jobs, and bring lasting benefits to Arviat and Inuit Nunangat.”

NTI extends its sincere congratulations and gratitude to Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami for its leadership and vision, and the community of Arviat for its preparedness to host the main campus, and thanks all those who have worked tirelessly to bring Inuit Nunangat University to this important milestone.
