(October 5, 2004 – Rankin Inlet, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Paul Kaludjak today applauded the federal government’s decision to work with the Territories to develop the first-ever comprehensive strategy for the North. The announcement was made by the Right Hon. Adrienne Clarkson, Canada’s Governor-General, as she delivered the Speech from the Throne this afternoon.

The development of the Northern Strategy was raised earlier this year by Prime Minister Paul Martin’s government during the Throne Speech delivered in February.

We are pleased that the Prime Minister reiterated the commitment he previously made to Inuit, and to all Northerners concerning the creation of the Northern Strategy, said Kaludjak. Now, we want to see actual progress made on the development of this long-awaited for document.

The Throne Speech states that the federal government plans to work with its territorial partners, Aboriginal people and other Northern residents to develop a Northern Strategy that fosters sustainable economic and human development while protecting the environment, sovereignty and security.
