(January 29, 2018 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) The Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation’s Board of Directors met in Iqaluit last week to discuss and review projects from the open call for project concepts that was released in October 2017. This was the first open call since its inception in May 2015.
Due to the overwhelming interest from the open call, Makigiaqta has deferred the project review process until the summer. This is to allow for sufficient human resources to be recruited, allowing Makigiaqta to better support organizations in our efforts to enhance the preparedness of Nunavut Inuit for employment.
Makigiaqta’s four strategic priority areas consists of; early learning systems, wrap around support for success in education, foundational skills development opportunities for adults, and advanced training and post-secondary opportunities for employment in key sectors.
Makigiaqta was formed using $175 million in funds secured through the Settlement Agreement with the Government of Canada. The funds will be used to support the development and delivery of Inuit-specific learning and employment programs. Makigiaqta’s goal is to bring the level of Inuit employment in public and private sectors to a representative level.
