The Director of Marine will lead the Department of Marine and be responsible for implementing the Marine Action Plan, building strategic relationships, developing and leading a high-performing team, and managing the departmental budget. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director will drive results across several key priority areas, including building capacity to advance marine opportunities in Nunavut; supporting and strengthening Inuit marine governance as envisioned in the Nunavut Agreement; advancing marine spatial planning initiatives in Nunavut; supporting Inuit-led marine conservation initiatives; advancing fisheries reconciliation in Nunavut; improving the sustainability and accessibility of shipping in Nunavut; enhancing marine safety and security in Nunavut; and supporting the integration of Inuit knowledge into conservation and management measures in the Central Arctic Ocean. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, foster collaboration with partners and stakeholders, and ensure the Department’s work advances Inuit priorities and sustainable marine development across Nunavut.
The ideal candidate will hold an advanced university degree from a recognized institution and have at least five years of experience in marine policy research and analysis, along with a minimum of one year in financial management, budgeting, or research grants administration. The role requires experience working collaboratively in diverse team environments, including with government, Inuit organizations, and international agencies, as well as demonstrated experience in developing or delivering Inuit training programs. Candidates should have strong skills in researching, analyzing, and interpreting policy, legislation, and regulations, with knowledge of territorial, federal, and international frameworks, as well as awareness of Nunavut Inuit aspirations. Strong financial management abilities, including administering large budgets, are essential. The position also requires excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with varied audiences, alongside strong interpersonal, organizational, teamwork, and self-motivation skills. The ability to use multiple presentation methods is important. Proficiency in Inuktut, or a willingness to learn, is required. Equivalencies will be considered.
Salary range is $172,000 to $206,300 per annum (commensurate with experience). A comprehensive benefit package including an employee pension plan, group insurance and vacation travel assistance.
Housing allowance of $35,865.00
