Mr. Charlie Evalik, President of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association is pleased to announce the establishment of an Inuit-owned resource corporation to invest in resource development in Canada’s North.
The Nunavut Resources Corporation (NRC), owned by Inuit organizations, including the Kitikmeot Inuit Association, the Kivalliq Inuit Association and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, will provide Inuit with an opportunity to become more fully involved in the North’s resource development activities and will help to ensure that the people of Nunavut get more from their resources.
President Evalik notes that while our current benefits plans get us the jobs and contracting opportunities we deserve, and our land holdings will generate royalties, Inuit still depend on others to make the development decisions and investments. That means the real gains, including capital gains, from development in Nunavut go to others. It is time for Inuit to enhance their participation in development on their lands and in Nunavut.
The formation of NRC means Inuit can move from being watchers to being participants and decision-makers in the development of the North. NRC, through access to southern capital markets, will seek investment opportunities in resource development both on Inuit-owned lands and Crown lands and will provide Inuit with access to the entire value chain in mineral and other developments.
NRC will be guided by a board drawn from business leaders with expertise in corporate finance and mineral development and will be chaired by Charlie Evalik. Members of the board will be appointed over the next few months.
