On August 6, residents of Clyde River celebrated “Aqvik!”, a special event organized by NTI to celebrate the efforts to finalize the World’s First Bowhead Sanctuary.
The event drew visitors, press and dignitary from across Canada, and included a community feast and games. NTI and QIA would like to thank both Canadian North and First Air for their donation to this event.

I was delighted to be able to join in the early August ‘Aqvik’ celebrations in Clyde River, representing WWF and also, with Donald Ross, Students On Ice. The community, QIA, NTI and many others including Environment Canada are to be congratulated on sustaining efforts over the past 25 years to help reach this point. WWF looks forward to the October 2009 federal govt. gazetting and final protection of this new National Wildlife Area, and then to seeing the IIBA and Management Plan fully implemented. Again, very well done to NTI and all concerned!
