Hunters in Pond Inlet successfully harvested a bowhead whale earlier this week.
The whale was harvested on the third day of the hunt, approximately 150 kilometres west of Pond Inlet in an area called Nadlua, or Navy Board Inlet. The mammal was 42 feet long. Officials at the hunt reported that the animal was harvested in an extremely efficient and humane manner.
This is the first of three bowhead whale hunts to be conducted in Nunavut this summer. The other two will be conducted in the communities of Kugaaruk and Repulse Bay later this summer.
Inuit are entitled to harvest three bowhead whales in Nunavut waters in accordance with the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
