(May 2, 2002 – Iqaluit, Nunavut) The Board of Directors, the Executive and the staff at Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated extend their deep regret in the death of Gooteleah Arlooktoo, and their sympathies go out to all his family members.
As a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Government of the Northwest Territories, Goo was very active on behalf of his people and there was much confidence in him. He became a Member of the Cabinet upon his election. Goo worked hard for the creation of Nunavut and it’s own government since the signing of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement on April 1, 1999. With his vision, knowledge and patience, Goo contributed to the division from NWT and the newly created Territory of Nunavut. People respected him, for his approachability both in the Northwest Territories and in Nunavut. His contributions become more evident as implementation takes place.
Recently, in private partnership with Amagoalik and Associates, Goo did some work for NTI and he attended the Nunavut Economic Forum, when all the major Inuit organizations in Nunavut came together in Rankin Inlet in 1999.
About a month ago, NTI appointed Goo as one of two representatives for the Nunavut Implemention Committee, a working group created through the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. He was also appointed by NTI to the negotiation team between the Federal Government and the Nunavut Government for the Implementation Contract Renewal for the next 10 years.
