(Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. 1st Vice-President, James Eetoolook isn’t surprised by the findings in the Qanukkanniq GN Report Card.
“A lot of the issues and recommendation in the report card are parallel to what we have been saying for years in regards to social issues.” said Eetoolook. “We have heard the same issues when the board of directors holds public meetings and during consultations and research for the annual report on the State of Inuit Culture and Society.”
The report card is currently under review by each of the departments in the Government of Nunavut. The GN is planning to meet later this month to complete an action plan in response to the recommendations made in the report card.
“Right now the GN has the baton in their hands. It is imperative that the GN keeps in-mind Article 32 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement when they meet to make an action plan. Before any action can be taken whether it is action on policy or program, Inuit need to be involved from the starting line.” concluded Eetoolook.
