NTI Reinstates Vice President of Finance and Advances Key Resolutions at 2025 AGM

(October 24, 2025 – Rankin Inlet, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik concluded the 2025 Annual General Meeting in Rankin Inlet yesterday evening, following three days of reports, resolutions and collective direction setting for Inuit priorities. A key decision was the reinstatement of the NTI Vice President of Finance, with potential responsibilities of Secretary-Treasurer, Chair of Inuit Social and Cultural Development Advisory Committee, Contribution Committee, Contracting Committee, Igluvut Corporation and other duties related to NTI programs and administration.

“Strengthening accountability within NTI ensures Inuit voices are heard by our board and staff,” said NTI President Jeremy Tunraluk. “Reintroducing a Vice-President of Finance strengthens our ability to oversee spending, report transparently, and build lasting trust with Nunavut Inuit.”

Historically, NTI had three Vice-Presidents, including a Vice-President of Finance who also acted as Secretary-Treasurer until 2010, when responsibilities were consolidated under the President. Reinstating this dedicated role enables stronger financial oversight and allows the President and Vice-Presidents to more fully focus on advancing strategic, Inuit-led priorities.

AGM Resolutions: Strengthening Communities, Equity, and Wellbeing
In addition to governance improvements, the AGM passed resolutions across critical areas including transportation, infrastructure, education, mental wellness, financial inclusion, land-based safety, public health, social wellbeing, and community protection.

Member Resolutions called for:
• Access to safe drinking water – Calls for increased investments in drinking water and wastewater infrastructure
• Airline Services – Calls on Canada to implement Competition Bureau recommendations and include Inuit in national working group on northern air transportation
• Airport Runways – Urges Canada and the Government of Nunavut (GN) to develop plans to pave runways in all Nunavut communities
• Beer and Wine Stores (Iqaluit & Rankin) – Calls for a community-led review, including plebiscites, and potential closure or restrictions until proper supports are in place.
• Elder Care Facilities and Housing – Calls on the GN to build more elder housing and long-term care facilities beyond regional hubs and train Inuit workers
• Inuit Access to Banking – Encourages national banks and Canada to improve culturally safe, Inuktut-accessible financial services in Nunavut.
• Inuit-Led Schools – Calls on Canada and the GN to support the establishment of Inuit-led schools grounded in Inuit language, culture, and ways of life.
• Mental Wellness – Urges immediate emergency funding and coordinated action on suicide prevention, and youth mental wellness.
• Polar Bear Management – Calls for urgent action to address polar bear safety risks and to revise quotas using Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit.
• Stopping Hard Drugs – Seeks partnerships with Canada Post, RCMP, and governments to improve screening and stop illegal drugs from entering Nunavut.
• Zero Tolerance on Violence and Harassment – Affirms NTIs commitment to zero tolerance on violence, accountability and perpetrators, and support for the Inuit Me Too movement, survivors and the LGBTQ2+ community

NTI will advance the outcomes of the AGM through strengthened governance, transparent financial oversight, and implementation of resolutions focused on Inuit wellbeing, safety, culture, and self-determination.
