NR 03-25 AWA ENG Awards Ceremony.doc
(November 7, 2003 — Sanikiluaq, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) today recognized the contributions many people have made to Inuit well-being in a special ceremony during the Annual General Meeting in Sanikiluaq. Nearly 100 delegates participating in the AGM were on hand for the event.
I am so proud of all the people who work hard to make this territory a better place to live now and for future generations. This kind of caring for one another is the way Inuit survived for thousands of years. I feel confident that we will continue to succeed when I see this kind of dedication, said NTI President Cathy Towtongie.
This year’s NTI Recognition Awards were presented to:
Daisy Dialla (Panniqtuuq) – A teacher in Panniqtuuq, Daisy Dialla is known across the territory for her contribution to promoting and preserving Inuktitut in the classroom. She has inspired hundreds of children and taught them to take pride in their Inuktitut skills. Even a fire at the school, during which Daisy lost all of her teaching materials, could not dampen her drive to teach Inuktitut to younger generations.
Joseph Niptanatiak (Kugluktuk) – Joseph Niptanatiak is well known for the work he has done on Elders’ issues. In the community of Kugluktuk, he is very well known for the activities he organizes between Elders and Youth. Joseph plays a critical role in ensuring Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is passed from Elders to Youth.
Johnassie Inuktaluk (Sanikiluaq) – Johnassie Inuktaluk was nominated as the Hamlet of Sanikiluaq’s Outstanding Citizen for the help he provides and the voluntary work he does for his community, most notably, the time he saved a group of hunters by beaching their boat during high winds.
Mayor Annie Amitook, Hamlet Council and the People of Sanikiluaq – NTI extended heartfelt thanks to the hamlet of Sanikiluaq for the job the Mayor, the Hamlet Council and the community job did in hosting delegates to the 2003 Annual General Meeting. Participants felt welcomed by the community and were pleased with the manner in which the meeting and evening activities were conducted.
