(February 6, 2012 – Rankin Inlet, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik President Cathy Towtongie said today the organization is pleased the Indian Residential School Adjudication Secretariat is travelling to Nunavut communities to hold information sessions on the Independent Assessment Process.
The Adjudication Secretariat was created as a third-party neutral organization by the Government of Canada to implement and administer the IAP. NTI collaborated with the secretariat to plan and prepare the information sessions. Outreach workers are visiting every community to provide general information on the IAP. Workers are not permitted to help file IAP claims or provide legal advice.
Under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, the IAP provides compensation to former students who experienced serious physical and sexual abuse.
The deadline to submit an IAP application is September 19, 2012.
