NTI Announces Jose Amaujaq Kusugak Memorial Scholarship

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. Vice-President James Eetoolook today announced the creation of the Jose Amaujaq Kusugak Memorial Scholarship. Jose passed away in January after a battle with cancer. He was an internationally known and respected Inuit leader.

“Jose dedicated his life to Nunavut and the advancement of Inuit rights. His passion and dedication to education and the promotion and preservation of Inuit language enabled Inuit to make many strides. By announcing this scholarship program, NTI is ensuring Jose’s ability to inspire Inuit continues through post-secondary education,” said Eetoolook.

The scholarship will award two Inuit each with $5,000 to pursue studies at accredited post-secondary institutions in the areas of education and Inuit language. Students may attend Nunavut Arctic College or academic institutions in southern Canada. An NTI jury will review the applications and select the students based on their fields of study, written essay, and references.

NTI will accept applications from April 1 to July 9, Nunavut Day, each year. Students who are enrolled as Beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement are eligible for the scholarship. Application forms will be available from NTI and on the website on April 1, 2011.
