Naming of KIA Buildings

On October 20, 2014 KIA President Dr. Charlie Evalik was pleased to officially open the new KIA administrative building in Cambridge Bay. Kitikmeot Corporation held a reception during the official opening, which had representatives from KC, KIA, NTI and members of the public from Cambridge Bay and throughout Nunavut.

“I am pleased to inform you all that the name that has been chosen as a result of our building naming contest is the Fred R. Elias Centre, as you know he was the Executive Director of KIA for some 16 years and was very instrumental in setting the policies and procedures that we still follow today as an organization.” said Dr. Evalik.

Dr. Evalik also mentioned that the boardroom in the new Fred R. Elias Centre would officially be known at the Patrick Lyall Boardroom. “Mr. Lyall was a long standing board member of the KIA and had contributed greatly during his tenure” added Dr. Evalik.

President Evalik continued with the name that was selected for the Kugluktuk Lands & Environment office. “Our office in Kugluktuk will now be known as the Ikey Bolt Building, Ikey was a respected Elder in the community and has many relatives that still reside there today”.

“All names represent very well a cross section of people of our region that have played an important part in moving the region forward in terms of governance and leadership”, concluded Dr. Evalik.

Family members of all the names chosen were present at the official opening.
