NTI Announces Unofficial Results of Presidential Election

(December 13, 2016 — Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) Chief Returning Officer Mary Wilman today announced that Aluki Kotierk was elected president of NTI. Kotierk will serve as president until 2020.

Levinia Brown, Aluki Kotierk, Joe Adla Kunuk and Cathy Towtongie all competed for the role of president during the election.

Voter turnout was approximately 31.9 per cent.

NTI Elections for President Poll to Reopen in Kugluktuk

(December 13, 2016 — Iqaluit, Nunavut)     Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) Chief Returning Officer Mary Wilman announced this morning that the poll for the NTI Election for President will reopen in Kugluktuk at 10 am MT.

 

The poll was closed unexpectedly yesterday because of poor weather. Conditions have now improved meaning the poll can reopen. Once the poll closes at 3 pm MT, the election results for all other communities will be displayed on NTI’s website, www.tunngavik.com. The Kugluktuk results will be displayed as soon as the votes are counted.

NTI Election for President Final Results to be Delayed Due to Weather

(December 12, 2016 — Iqaluit, Nunavut)     Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) Chief Returning Officer Mary Wilman today said that final results will be delayed in the election for president due to poor weather in Kugluktuk. Wilman said polls in Kugluktuk closed today at approximately 2 pm MT due to weather and will reopen as soon as conditions improve. Votes will be counted as soon as the community is able to finish the election.

Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) is hosting a social media awareness campaign to promote the importance of voting in the NTI Election for President on Dec. 12, 2016.

Inuit who are enrolled in the Nunavut Agreement and are 16 years of age by Dec. 12, 2016 are eligible to participate in the contest.

NTI will pick the four best entries and use them in our social media awareness campaign in the weeks leading up to the NTI Election for President. Each winning contestant will receive an iPAD Pro.

NTI Speaks Up for Use of Inuktut in Cape Dorset and across Nunavut Schools

(October 27, 2016 – Iqaluit, Nunavut)             “The incident in Cape Dorset invoked emotions on a very sensitive issue that we thought we would never live through again,” says the Vice President of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., James Eetoolook.

 

“Reports of an eighth grade student being threatened with punishment for speaking Inuktut are very disturbing,” said Eetoolook.  “As Minister Quassa has properly noted, it brings back painful memories of the past for many Inuit.  That era is over.  NTI is relying on the Minister to oversee a full and prompt review of the practices and policies of the Department in this regard, to make that report public, and to take the necessary corrective action.”

 

Until we have fully bilingual teachers and classes where the majority of educators speak Inuktut, language and cultural conflicts may unfortunately continue.

 

To prevent this from happening across Nunavut, we need an education system and strong legislation that are built upon fully effective bi-lingual Inuktut and English instruction in our schools.

 

Eetoolook is hopeful that bolstering the Inuit Language will bring a sense of pride for parents to be involved in their schools as well as foster a sense of belonging for children from Kindergarten to grade 12.

 

The time is now to enhance the roles of DEAs and provide them with full support, as a way for parents and children to channel their sense of belonging within the schools.

 

The Teachers Education Program was a great success story for many Inuit to become teachers after the residential school era.  We can learn from that example to bring more Inuit educators into the school system.

 

Eetoolook noted that “NTI has been and will continue to be active in offering options and solutions to education in Nunavut that will result in Inuit children graduating with a high quality education, fully bilingual in Inuktut and English.   We hope the Government of Nunavut will work with us closely on these options and solutions to improve the education system in Nunavut.”

The nine-member Board of Directors is responsible for the organization’s strategic direction, helping advance knowledge of the Canadian Arctic and strengthening Canadian leadership in polar science and technology.

The Government of Canada is looking for applicants with knowledge and experience that will assist POLAR in carrying out its Arctic and Antarctic research mandate, and also reflect the cultural and demographic diversity of Canada’s Arctic. Nunavut Inuit Resource Revenue Trust – Independent Trustee

Nunavut Inuit Resource Revenue Trust is seeking one qualified individual to serve as independent trustee for a term of three years (expires Nov. 30, 2019).

The ideal candidate will have a combination of post-secondary education and relevant professional experience in the fields of finance, investment, accounting, business, law or corporate management. While candidates who strictly meet the criteria are preferred, those with a combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.

Priority will be given to individuals enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement.

Independent Trustees are required to attend one face-to-face meeting and one to two teleconference every year, and will receive daily honoraria and reimbursement of expenses.

Inuusinni Aqqusaaqtara – My Journey

Ottawa, ON (April 28, 2016) Pauktuutit Inuit women of Canada is pleased to announce the launch of a new online Inuit-specific cancer resource. Rebecca Kudloo, Pauktuutit’s President, commended this new online resource and noted that “Cancer has affected many Inuit women and their families. Understanding cancer through Inuit-specific resources will enable people to improve their self-care and cancer prevention to live healthier lives.”

The new online cancer resource, entitled Inuusinni Aqqusaaqtara – My Journey includes resources such as:
• Pauktuutit’s Kaggutiq Inuit Cancer Glossary, which is a glossary of cancer related terminology in plain English and five Inuktitut dialects, developed with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC);
• a series of cancer related videos that share the cancer journey through the eyes of Inuit cancer survivors, health care workers and family members, also funded by PHAC;
• an interactive map that identifies cancer treatment centres, support resources and places for Inuit to stay in urban centres during treatment; and
• other Inuit-specific cancer awareness tools to be developed in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, with funding generously donated by Jaguar Land Rover Canada.
