Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Cathy Towtongie today announced the recipients of the Jose Amaujaq Kusugak Scholarship. Miali-Elise Coley of Iqaluit and Lynn Kilabuk of Pangnirtung will each receive $5,000 toward their studies. Coley is pursuing her Bachelor of Education at the University of Regina. Kilabuk is pursuing her Bachelor of Education in Pangnirtung through the Nunavut Teacher Education Program at Nunavut Arctic College.
“I am pleased to award two future teachers with financial assistance as they strive to pass on their knowledge of Inuit language and culture to our children,” said Towtongie. “Their efforts ensure Jose’s legacy of the promotion and preservation of Inuit rights in all aspects of life carries on.”
NTI received a total of 22 applications for the scholarship. A jury reviewed the applications and chose to award the scholarships to Coley and Kilabuk because both students clearly demonstrated their commitment to Inuit language and education.
“On behalf of our family, I offer congratulations to the recipients. I also thank all applicants for applying for the scholarship. Our family is very grateful for honouring my father, Jose, with this scholarship. I wish the students good luck in their studies,” said Pujjuut Kusugak.
The next deadline for the Jose Amaujaq Kusugak Scholarship is July 9, 2013. Students enrolled as Beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement are eligible for the scholarship.NTI Announces 2012 Jose Amaujaq Kusugak Scholarship Recipients (pdf)
