IQALUIT, Nunavut (October 16, 2001) The Annual General Meeting of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc (NTI) was held in Pangnirtung, Nunavut from October 9 to 12, 2001. The meeting was considered by all to be a great success.
Over the course of the four day meeting, discussions were held concerning progress on resolutions passed at last year’s AGM in Arviat; changes to NTI Bylaws and Election Rules and Procedures; funding requests for Sakku Investments Corporation, Health Facilities and 2002 Arctic Winter Games; new Beneficiary insurance funding; and changes to NTI’s Excess Shortfall Spending Policy.
Presentations were made by each NTI Executive Member, the Presidents of QIA, KivIA and KitIA, The Chairs of Nunavut Trust and Atuqtuarvik Corporation, Nunavut Social Development Council, Inuit Heritage Trust, Nunavut Sivuniksavut and Nunavut Implementation Training Committee. Special Reports were made by Elders, Women and Youth delegates.
Premier Paul Okalik, Inuit Tapirisat Katami President Jose Kusugak and Pauktuutit President Veronica Dewar made guest presentations, as did Zacharias Kunuk from Isuma Productions.
2001-2002 Audits and 2002-2003 Budgets for NTI, QIA, KivIA, KitIA, NSDC, and IHT were presented and discussed.
On Tuesday night, Isuma Productions’ award winning feature film, Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner, was screened. There was standing room only in the community hall and the film was received with great enthusiasm. The Arctic Winter Games Committee hosted a community feast on Wednesday night and on Thursday evening, NTI hosted a community feast and awards night.
Mayor Mayor Hezakiah Oshutapik, the Hamlet Council and the People of Pangnirtung were thanked for their hospitality in hosting the Meeting and were presented with a plaque of appreciation. The late Laura Udluriaq Gauthier was presented NTI’s President’s Award for her contributions to the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and to the creation of the Territory of Nunavut. The late Susan Aningmiuq also received the President’s Award for the contribution she made to Nunavut and all of Canada through her music.
Friday night saw a dance hosted by the community of Pangnirtung. NTI made donations to Attagoyuk School, the venue for the meeting, and to several local sports teams.
